Two escape burning house in rural Meeker County
LITCHFIELD — A homeowner and guest safely escaped a house fire that broke out as they were sleeping at 1:15 a.m. Friday, the Meeker County Sheriff's Office reported.
Homeowner Kellie Heggem and a guest got out of the home on the 31000 block of 710th Avenue, Kingston Township. Numerous cats were in the house, and all but one was accounted for, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The fire started and was contained to the northeast corner of the house. The outer wall, upstairs bedrooms, and attic were damaged. There was extensive smoke damage throughout the house.
The Dassel and Kimball Fire Departments also responded.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
Montevideo man injured in Murray County crash
MARSHALL — A Montevideo man was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at the Slayton Hospital after his vehicle struck a semi-truck stopped alongside U.S. Highway 59 southeast of Avoca in Murray County around 5:14 p.m. Thursday.
Kevin Ray Lancaster, 45, was northbound near 220th Avenue when his 2003 Nissan Altima struck the rear of a 2011 International Prostar that was stationary outside of a work zone, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
The driver of the International, Justin Gene Staeffler, 32, was not injured.
The Fulda Fire and Ambulance, Murray County Ambulance, and Avoca First Responders also responded.
Driver hurt when semi overturns near New London
WILLMAR — The driver of a 2007 Volvo semi-truck was injured when the vehicle left state Highway 23 at Kandiyohi County Road 31 and overturned at 8:16 a.m. Friday.
Eric Samuel Elmstrand, 43, of North Branch, was transported to Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
He was driving a semi tractor-trailer southbound on Highway 23 when he swerved to avoid another vehicle that was stopped waiting to make a left turn, according to the State Patrol. The semi ran off the road into the west ditch and overturned.
The New London Ambulance also responded.
Bicyclist steals purse
WILLMAR — A young boy riding a bicycle took a purse from a parked vehicle and pedaled away with it, according to a report filed Thursday evening with Willmar police. The incident occurred on the 1300 block of Fifth Street Southeast. The suspect was riding a blue bike and is described as a skinny, black male with a white scarf and white tank top.
