Willmar man sentenced for fleeing

MONTEVIDEO — Steve Lopez, 29, of Willmar, was sentenced to one year and one day in prison for felony charges of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle.

The charges stem from two separate incidents.

In October, Lopez led authorities on a 60-mile chase that started in Montevideo and ended in Swift County.

As part of a plea agreement at that time, Lopez pleaded guilty in Chippewa County District Court to a felony charge of fleeing a peace officer and two misdemeanor driving charges were dismissed. A 30-day jail sentence was stayed and Lopez was put on probation for three years.

But in January, Lopez violated the conditions of that stay of imposition when he was involved with another high-speed chase in Montevideo after police saw him running out of a store with store employees in pursuit.

Lopez left the store's parking lot in a van traveling 70-80 miles an hour while being pursued by police down streets, county roads and eventually on a bike path where he left the van and tried to escape on foot.

According to the complaint filed against him, Lopez was eventually arrested when police cornered him in a grove of trees.

Earlier this month, in connection with the January incident, he pleaded guilty in Chippewa County to a charge of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle. Five misdemeanor charges of fleeing a peace officer on foot, reckless driving, failure to stop at stop sign, theft and driving after revocation were dismissed.

On Monday he was sentenced to one year and one day in prison, with credit given for time served.
